There isn't anything here that isn't the equivalent of any post modern painter in these works. Schminke is amazingly talented who ever she may be. Perhaps a student of art, clearly compositionally accomplished. I personally think these 16 works are stunning. There are elements that truly capture modern impressionism. I came across these at a public auction in Santa Barbara. They were rolled up and I bought them with a lot of other paintings as I tend to do. This week I finally rolled them out and gave them a second look. I never quite knew what to do with them then, I'm not sure what to do with them now. However, they are too lovely to keep tucked away any longer. None of these paintings are stretched, they've been rolled up, stored for some 20 years. I've not been able to find out anything about the artist. However, I have felt honored to own a collection of works so nicely done. There are only a handful of people in California with the name Schminke. I made a few phone calls, but nothing came of it. Schminke is a German name, and there is a company that produces art pigments by that name, they produce fine quality pastels, pencils, watercolor paints. So this year I'm clearing out my garage of all its wonderful treasures... thank God for ebay!!! Some of the paintings are signed and dated, most are not. The ones that are are dated from 1950 to 1952 so these works must all be from that period. They are all painted on raw unprepared thick canvas. The colors are absolutely wonderful both dynamic and subtle. The flowers and floral motif are painted in bright heavy paint, while the backgrounds are washes. There are some amateur elements, but being an art aficionado myself they bring to mind Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollack, Jane Peterson, Raoul Duffy, Edvard Munch and others. The quality is here, the technique is here. I'm sure they are plain air still life works as the flowers seem as fresh and vibrant as the day they were picked. For now we have decided to keep them as a group. They are now flattened out, stored in a flat art drawer at our office. They are all in good condition, some minor crazing, all have wonderful appeal.
