He came from a family of ancient nobility, and had no artistic background or education. He debuted in 1890, illustrating 'La Pupille de Pollichinelle' by O. Le Roy. Since 1893, he contributed to many satirical magazines of the time, including Le Triboulet, Nos Vieux, La Caricature and Le Chat Noir.
