Description
Adam and Eva by Jack Savitsky.  12 x 9 matted to 12 x 16.  Pencil, ink and marker on paper  Signed and dated 80 in bottom right corner.   The words:  Adam and Eva in bottom left corner.  John "Jack" Savitsky was born in Silver Creek PA in 1910.  He was a coal miner, with a sixth grade education who lived and mined in Lansford, PA.  In 1959 he contracted Black Lung disease.  His on reminded him that he enjoyed drawing and painting in his youth.  Jack's wife, Mary Lou, was an art teacher and supplied him with paints and other art supplies.  Savitsky's work came to the attention of Sterling Strauser, the self effacing artist, collector and supporter of self taught artists.  Strauser got recognition for Savitsky and he enjoyed fame in his lifetime.   After a time, Savitsky could no longer paint because of his illness and began to draw with pencils.  Mary Lou supplied him with paper which he used along with cereal box tops and anything he could get his hands on.  Savitsky worked from memory, creating many coal mining scenes, but his vision went much further and he would experiment with varied images, from religious to imaginary.  Savitsky's work is included in major collection in the United States and exhibited by the Museum of American Folk Art, the Allentown Art Museum, and other major museums.  Jack Savitsky passed away in 1991.
