Description
Untitled Document Untitled Document Update: 11/17/08 - The situation which warranted the listing of this blotter art has passed. I have already raised the funds needed. I will continue to let this auction run but if it does not sell I will most likely not relist this rare print. If you have ever considered owning one of these prints, now is the time. I don't think you could find another for the Buy It Now price. I could not replace this print for the Buy It Now price, either. Thanks for looking at the auction and please let me know if I can answer any questions for you. This artwork has been relisted: The information in blue is new information. The information in black is the information that was given in the first listing. I am relisting this blotter art. The first time I listed the art I had the art offered at $14,999. Sure, that price was pretty high. My logic was that someone might offer $7,500 for the item, which I believe is considerably less than the item's worth. I have had a few conversations with other people who own one of these prints. It is my opinion the actual value of this print is $10,000. My opinion is based on the fact that one of these sold for $5,200 several weeks before Dr. Hofmann died. At that point, there was still the possibility that Dr. Hofmann could sign more blotter art. Dr. Hofmann has since passed away, and the possibility of another Hofmann signature is gone forever. Another facet of my evaluation is replacement value. For example, if this piece were to be stolen or destroyed in a fire, I feel certain that I would have to pay $10,000+ to replace it on short notice. Sure, I could hunt for years and possibily find one cheaper, but I would have to pay a premium to replace it in a timely manner. Finally, the extremely limited quantity and rarity of both Hofmann and Leary signatures add to this item's value. I spoke with James from Skyline Books (www.sweetbooks.com) and his opinion is that there were only about 12 of these prints that were signed by both Dr. Leary and Dr. Hofmann. His thoughts are based on coversations that he and Thom Lyttle had regarding the signing of the art and the parties involved. James feels certain that while Dr. Hofmann signed 25 prints, they were not all signed by Leary. This information is supported by the fact that one of my good friends, who lives in London, owns one of these prints and it is signed only by Dr. Hofmann. My friend purchased that print from MAPS (www.maps.org) as part of a fundraiser for psychedelic research. As we all know the economy is considerably slow, I am relisting this print for a more reasonable sum than my initial offering. The new opening price is what I hoped to get the first time I offered the print. I feel certain that I could not replace this print for the purchase price. If you are on the fence, or would like more information, please feel free to contact me by phone or email. My toll free number is 1-888-Tim-Leary (1-888-846-5327). If I need to sweeten the deal to make a sale, let's talk. I have many rare blotter art prints signed by Timothy Leary, as well as prints signed by Sasha Shulgin, Ken Kesey, and other noted figures. Thanks for taking a look at my auction and consider this rare item. Please read the text below for the information given in the first offering. Albert Hofmann / Timothy Leary Signed Blotter Art Ladies and Gentlemen - Up for your consideration is the Holy Grail of Blotter Art collecting. There is no blotter art print more desireable or more valuable. This print was signed in 1994 by Dr. Albert Hofmann and Dr. Timothy Leary. Dr. Hofmann signed this print exactly 51 years after his first planned LSD experience. There are only 25 in existinance. The ownership of many of these prints remains hidden in secrecy. Here is your chance to join an elite club, an opportunity which you may never have again. Unfortunate circumstances force this reluctant sale. This is the story about this print as best I recall. If there are any errors I apologize. If knowledgable persons contact me convincing me I am incorrect I will stand corrected. Robert Demarest, a well known rare book collector in Florida, as well as Thom Lyttle and Mark McCloud are responsible for having these elusive prints signed by Dr. Hofmann. Robert wrote several letters to Dr. Hofmann and convinced him to sign 25 of these prints. At the time, Dr. Hofmann thought these prints were "modern art." He obliged Mr. Demarest by signing and returning 24 of the prints, keeping one for himself. The prints were then given to Timothy Leary to add his signature. From there, the prints were distributed amongst the parties involved. Several of the prints stayed in the possession of Timothy Leary, several went to Mr. Demarest, several to Mr. Lyttle, and several to Mr. McCloud. In all fairness, I should mention that Kevin Barron was the man behind the production of the blotter art print itself. This print in particular was obtained by myself from Thom Lyttle. I was a friend of Thom's and had some joint ventures into the world of art with him. Thom and I published Laurence Gartel, HR Giger, and Peter Fonda as collectible works of blotter art. For those that don't already know, Thom recently passed away. This print has been stored in the double glazed frame you see here. The past few years it has been kept in my closet, protected from light, yet hidden in darkness. Something this significant should be displayed proudly, something that I hope it's new owner will be able to do. Please take some time to study the photos I have provided. I have placed a watermark on the images to reduce the possibility of their misuse. This watermark is digital and does not appear on the art itself. I will be happy to provide additional images or information to interested parties. I will also be happy to speak by telephone with individuals who are interested in adding this rarity to their collection. You can call 1-888-Tim-Leary (888-846-5327). It is with a heavy heart that I offer this listing. I am stating the obvious by saying that there will never be another work of art created with these two signatures. We can agree that this art is rare and very expensive. Some of the best things in life are. The others are free. Carpe Diem. Thank you for looking.
