Description
Mr. Alex Haley, author of roots, was the first African-American Journalist in the United States Coast Guard. JOC Haley retired from the Coast Guard. On August 4,1990 Mr. Haley attended The 200th Coast Guard Anniversary in Grand Haven, Michigan. During his 7 day visit he was honored and presented with the items that are for auction. There are 3 items and will be sold together for one price. The First is a Coast Guard Pewter Plate enframed in glass with a small plate under which reads Bicentennial Celebration Aug 4,1990 Coast guard Festival Committee, there were only 2 plates presented at the time one was to Mr. Haley. The silver plate itself is engraved with The Coast Guard Insignia and the engraving above reads Coast Guard City USA, on the bottom it reads Grand Haven, Michigan. The second item is a print by Gary Odmark signed by Mr. Odmark, of the Grand Haven Boardwalk with a small plate under which reads To Alex Haley By Grand Haven, Ferrysburg,and Springlake 200th Anniversary of the U.S. Coast Guard Aug 4th 1990. The third item is a personal note from Mr. Haley which reads, with thanks for taking care of me and with brotherly love to you and your family! ALex Haley JOC,USCG(Ret). The personal note is signed by Mr. Haley. Please only serious inquiries. I would be happy to answer any questions.
