Description
~ ORIGINAL ~FOLK ARTEARLY AMERICAN PERIODOIL PAINTING~ BOSTON SCHOOL ~VIEW OF BOSTONFROM THE CHARLES RIVERTRUE AMERICANA!CIRCA EARLY 1850'sJust in from one of the many estate loads we receive in our shop each month is this wonderful old FOLK ART  'BOSTON SCHOOL' oil painting depicting a view of the city from the Charles River. This great vintage painting dates to the mid 1800's. It is of excellent quality and the subject matter has great historical AMERICANA appeal and desirability. This is a magnificent example of a true EARLY AMERICAN FOLK ART painting. Non-academic and totally natural! Naive, yet real! Made more special by the fact that this is an actual view of one of our greatest and most historical cities, BOSTON. This amazing painting is both a mid 19th Century genre pastoral landscape work AND a historical document of life near Boston in the early 1850's. That this is an actual view of an existing scene there is no doubt. The imposing skyline of Boston proper is clearly visible in the distance, with the steeple of the Old North Church prominent and standing tall. The three hills , or Tremont, are still visible, having been leveled in the later years of the mid 1800's. The road from Charlestown, along the Charles River is prominent in American history as part of the route taken by Paul Revere on his famous ride. He crossed the water from Boston proper to Charlestown, received his famous signal from the church tower and left heading to spread the word, The British are coming!, riding swiftly along this shoreline road. That this painting is of the period and of Boston is an absolute. The back of the canvas is stenciled with the mark of W.H. WHIPPLE-ARTIST'S SUPPLY STORE-35 CORNHILL ROAD-BOSTON. According to an article from 1973 in the 'Journal of the American Institute for Conservation', W. H. Whipple was in business from 1848 to 1868 in Boston. This great AMERICAN painting is all original and untouched by modern hands. The paint is original, with no modern repairs, only a few old touch ups to a scrape here and there. The surface retains it's original 'dry' finish. There are some minor flakes and some overall crazing and darkening to the surface. As illustrated in one of our photographs, there has been a tiny hole repaired upper middle in the far distant past. The frame is a period wood and gesso 'lemon gold' finish. The total presentation of frame and painting is magnificent! The glowing bright 'lemon gold' creates a frame of light, illuminating the scene spectacularly. The melding of the two, frame and painting, creates a work of fabulous decorative appeal. A perfect addition for any collection of major Folk Art!Original VINTAGE FOLK ART paintings are highly sought after today and command high prices on the open market! Paintings of historical America are even more desirable! This lovely and quite stunning painting measures 39 by 35 inches framed with the painting itself measuring 30 by 24 inches. The colors in the painting are soft and subtle, with a gentle, but vibrant glow, and the artist was one of good technique and a fair skill and talent, able to capture the true essence of the scene. There is a naive quality that transcends skill though, creating a truly American style, one of the everyday painter, self-trained and non-academic in a way European paintings seldom are. Folk Art is a genuine American creation, our own style 'of the masses', and the un-trained but innovative 19th century itinerant artist. In Europe painters had rich patrons, here the patron was the burgeoning middle class of a new free, democratic and wealthy nation. Art became freer, more democratic also, gone was the stiff academic 'enhanced' style the upper classes preferred, painting was 'of the people', natural, real, non-academic, TRUE FOLK ART. By itself the scene is pastoral and lovely, bucolic and idyllic, a totally wonderful painting , but add the city in the background and it provides a fascinating glimpse into a great AMERICAN landscape, the historical city of Boston! This elevates the painting to a new level, not just a lovely and rustic landscape, but a document of American experience. It becomes a historical artifact, not just a work of art. The details in the scene are quite charming, the cattle on the barge, the fisherman on the riverbank, the lady and child walking on the road all combine to give this painting great appeal. The scene becomes one of everyday country life in America. The artist melded these elements together with the distant more cosmopolitan scene of Boston and the busy boats in the back harbor creating a testimony of the changing aspect of a growing nation, a nation of peace and prosperity, rich and growing, with a wealth of land at it's disposal. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WHEN YOU RECEIVE THIS GREAT HISTORICAL DOCUMENT OF 19TH CENTURY BOSTON AND A FABULOUS ANTIQUE PAINTING, TOO!DETAIL OF LOWER LEFTDETAIL OF RIGHT SIDEA SMALL AREA OF PAINT LOSSA TRUE AMERICAN ANTIQUE!'BOSTON SCHOOL' CIRCA EARLY 1850'SDETAIL OF MIDDLE LEFT SHOWING WOMAN AND CHILD AND SOME OLD TOUCH UPS TO THE PAINTBEAUTIFUL DETAILING IN THE FOLIAGE!THE ROAD FROM CHARLESTOWN!A PERFECT PIECE FOR A COLLECTOR OF FOLK ART!LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF THE FABULOUS PERIOD FRAMEBILLOWING CLOUDS IN THE SKY!WE HAVE LEFT THE PAINTING UNTOUCHEDBUT A SLIGHT CLEANING WOULD BRING OUT MANY MORE COLORS AND DETAILS!A FABULOUS EARLY AMERICAN 'BOSTON SCHOOL' PAINTING!NAIVE AND SIMPLE, YET SO SKILLFULLY DEPICTING THE ESSENCE OF THE SCENE!SOME GOLD LOSS TO THE OUTER FRAME EDGEDETAIL OF ORIGINAL CANVAS EDGE AND STRETCHERANOTHER DETAIL OF EDGE OF CANVASVIEW OF BACK WITH ONE SMALL OLD REPAIR PATCHREVERSE OF PAINTING SHOWING ORIGINAL OLD CANVAS AND STRETCHERSCLOSEUP OF STRETCHERS AND STENCILUPPER LEFT CORNER DETAIL SHOWING MINOR CRAZING'OF THE PERIOD' DRESS ON THE SUBJECTSA GREAT VIEW OF BOSTON IN THE BACKGROUND!FANTASTIC FOLK ART PAINTING!GREAT COMPOSITION AND HISTORICAL SUBJECT MATTER!RICH VIBRANT COLORS ONLY SLIGHTLY MELLOWED BY 150 PLUS YEARS! A score of anything less than a 4.5 is considered  'poor' by Ebay and a seller's fees, placement in the new 'BEST MATCH' sort, and other ratings are based on these scores. If you feel our performance was anything less than a '5', please contact us to discuss what we can improve upon to make it right.
