Description
From photographer Berenice Abbott's celebrated "Changing New York" series. Abbott's WPA project documented New York City in the mid 1930's. This image of The Tri-Boro Barber School was taken October 24, 1935. Located at 264 Bowery between East Houston and Prince Street, it had closed within two years. On the three floors above the shop was the Hotel Nassua which rented rooms for 35 cents a night. The Bowery was filled with barber schools at the time, but this school was replaced by the Gotham Sheet Metal Works. Today, like so many of the buildings along the Bowery, the Tri-Boro building is occupied by a restaurant supply wholesaler. This photo measures approximately 15.25" x 19" and was printed in 1979 under the supervision of Abbott, who signed and numbered the portfolio. Her signature in pencil is located in the lower right front corner and the number "16/60" is in the lower left front corner of the mounting board. The information: "published by Parasol, 1979" is stamped on the reverse. The photo is archivally mounted on museum board. The item is being offered framed. The framed piece is 26.25" x 32.25." The condition is excellent. This is an early portfolio of many which Abbott began in 1978. Payment is by Paypal, money order, or certified check. Buyer pays for shipping and insurance. I will ship in the US for $60 and internationally for $85 plus insurance. If you prefer the photo unframed, I will halve the shipping cost but insurance remains the same. Please send me an email and I will be glad to answer any questions you may have. This is an authentic and original item. If the winning bidder is dissatisfied in anyway, contact me within 3 days and return the photo for a full refund. Note: there is some glare and reflection in these posted pictures due to glass and camera flash.
