Description
Artwork hidden under framed newspaper. This piece never came up at auction! Fabulous Find...  FROM THE ESTATE OF MANET HELEN FOWLER, PASTELS (CHALK) ON PAPER ARTWORK BY HER MOTHER, Manet Harrison Fowler, African American Musician and Educator from Forth Worth, Texas Welcome To Redduck's Attic Treasures and Find!   Art Treasure found!   In Feb., 2008 I purchased a framed newspaper from the Manet Helen Fowler estate sale at Hessney's Auction House in Geneva, NY.  After carefully inspecting my purchase, I tried to straighten the newspaper under the glass and noticed an original pastel on paper artwork signed and dated "Fowler '54" lower right hand-side of paper.   Manet Harrison Fowler is the mother of Manet Helen Fowler (please inspect signature below for your review). I was absolutely thrilled, this artwork never came up at auction!!!  Artist tend to "hide" their work for a couple of reason--either they're unhappy with it, or they feel the public isn't ready for it.  It's absolutely haunting, disturbing but FABULOUS all at the same time.  Fowler's artwork was a sideline, or hobby.  Manet Harrison Fowler (1895-1976) was a graduate from the Tuskegee Institute in 1913 and studied at the Chicago College of Music, in June 1928 Fowler founded the Mwalimu School in Texas and later relocated to Harlem in New York City.  Wife of Stephen Hamilton Fowler, they had four children, Manet Helen Fowler (b1916), Stephen Hamilton (b1918(, George Harrison (b1920) and Carroll Lacy (b1924). Fascinating! One of a kind!
