You are bidding on a fully handmade 16 by 10 inches mola. This is a superb quality mola of a lobster. Incredible amout of work and details, tight uniform stitches, bright colors and lots of reverse applique. 3 full layers of fabric and about 14 different colors. This is an amazing piece of folk art. ABOUT MOLAS: Molas are the creation of the Kuna Indians of the San Blas archipelago, on the Caribbean side of the Republic of Panama. They are exclusively made by Kuna women. The artisanship has been handed down from generation to generation. The designs, have evolved from simple to yet intricate geometric and symetric designs and shapes to later include animals, plants and flowers. In making molas Kuna artists are inspired by their surroundings in tropical Panama. In most cases molas are made with bright colored 100% cotton fabric, usually Poplin. One of the most unique features of the mola is a sewery technique known as reverse applique. To create this effect the artist places various layers of different colored cloth together. Then, cloth from the different layers is cut out to create a variety of figures and shapes, and stitched together with tiny almost invisible stitches.
