All rights reserved.    The Tokonoma Series The Tokonoma Series was inspired by the Asian art displayed in tokonomas alcoves. As the sacred center of a traditional Japanese home, tokonomas were reserved for treasured items like scrolls or calligraphy, beautiful kimonos, ikebana flower arrangements, miniature bonsai trees, and fine ceramics for tea ceremonies. The items displayed were changed for special occasions, according to the season, or to create different settings and atmospheres. Bamboo represents strength,endurance and resilience because it can bend with the wind and will not break. Bamboo is also a symbol of longevity because it's an evergreen grass. Finished with 7" x 5" white paper mat, 4.5" x 3" opening. The bamboo leaves are highlighted with gold metallic. On the right is a faux cloisonné mini scroll with butterflies and flowers. The butterfly's metamorphosis from a caterpillar and emergence from it's chrysalis symbolize rebirth and resurrection. To the Chinese and Japanese the butterfly is a sign of both immortality and joy. In Chinese art, butterflies combined with plum blossoms symbolize long life.
