Description:Displaying a sensitive use of color and texture, this image represents the evolution of the still life within Braque's career. With this image, the artist replaces the cubist formality of his early compositions with a fluid organic quality which would come to characterize the artist's later works. Published by Maeght c. 1956, this color etching is part of a series of lithographs and etchings based upon Braque's original watercolors, gouaches and paintings. Printed by Visat, the printer's name 'Visat Sculpt' is located in the plate in the lower left. Signed by Braque in pencil in the lower right, the work is a Hors de Commerce (HC) original etching and is noted in the lower left. Braque was very involved in the printing process, overseeing the engraver, correcting the proofs as necessary. Composed on a unique asymmetrical format, the warmth of the hues in this work bring a richness to the quality of the image. Full of painterly textural features, the use of soft pastels on a deep umber background make the image visually pop out of the picture plane. Brilliant hues of deep and pale blues, light green, and soft apricot, evoke a sense of the artist's understanding of the importance of the interplay of colors. The favored subject of the still life is apparent throughout the artist's career, and this work is a prime example of the skill and creative intellect which Braque masters in this wonderful work of art.
