Description
Brown Prison Art Handbag Candy Wrapper NEW Nahui Ollin Background of Tramp or Prison Art:In the movie classic "The Man With The Golden Arm," (1955) star Frank Sinatra, on being released from prison, presents his wife with a belt made of woven cigarette packs.  Prison art describes folk art objects made from folded and woven gum wrappers, cigarette packs (with & without the cellophane), paper bags, matchbook covers and similar recycled materials.    "Prison Art" can describe arts and crafts made by prison inmates and includes works such as paintings drawings, sculptures or whatever.  For our purposes we use "Prison Art" to describe a paper folding craft enjoyed and practiced by the public at large. During the 1960's a popular school girl art was crafting gum wrapper chains. Prison art is often referred to as tramp art.  Example:This bag is created by Nahui Ollin.  Nahui Ollin is a collection of unique and fashionable handbags and accessories made from recycled materials. All merchandise is entirely hand-made by specially folding and weaving individual candy wrappers, gum wrappers and soda bottle labels--together to create the various beautiful shapes and sizes of the Nahui Ollin Handbag and accessory Collection. ALL of the materials used, (Candy wrappers, gum wrappers and soda bottle labels) are factory rejects from independent manufactures and have never been used. These same materials were certain to be sent to a land fill or garbage dump only to pollute the earth more! Not only does the process sustain the environmentally-friendly practice of recycling, it also yields creatively-fresh, long lasting and innovative products. Made from up to 4000 individual candy wrappers, each piece is passionately and patiently hand made by craftsmen and follows the same process of folding, weaving, and sewing, which can take up to 4 days to complete. And while the bags are indeed made from candy wrappers, gum wrappers and soda bottle labels, they stand the test of time and weather for tear-free, long term durability. What you once would have discarded without hesitation, has been transformed and reshaped into the next must have fashion accessory. This bag is a example of the use of folk art in modern times.  It is brand new, never carried, with all tags attached.  The bag is made from candy wrappers, (mostly chocolate).  The handles are high grade brown leather with silvertone brushed, dual horseshoe hardware.  This bag measures 15" across the top, 11" tall,  and 7 1/2" wide.   There is also a black nylon zipper that keeps your items secure.  There is a photo of the inside of the bag.  The leather Nahui Ollin logo is inside the bag.  Please view our other listings for more Nahui Ollin items.
