The painting is in excellent condition with various provenance papers.   W.K. Bixby accelerated his art collecting after becoming the chairman of Fine Arts for the St. Louis Worlds Fair. He was among the first to build a mansion in the Westmoreland and Portland Places in St. Louis. He  purchased this painting for their home at 13 Portland. He is remembered as a generous philanthropist giving much of his money and collections away. His funds established the Bixby Hall of Fine Arts at Washington University, one of fourteen institutions named in his will. He was granted an honorary Master of Arts from Amherst College, MA. The New York Times, in an editorial, wrote that he, “…having done more than his share of the world’s work, found zest in…sharing his treasures with others”.   Bixby was never able to part with this work by Dawson Watson, and it remained hanging in the 13 Portland mansion until 1973, when it was gifted to the present owner. This is the first time it has been shown and offered for sale.   Dawson worked as a painter, teacher and designer for his entire career.  He was born in England and died in San Antonio, Texas. He painted in Giverny, France, New England, Woodstock, NY, St. Louis and San Antonio, Texas.   W.K.
