There is a thin wooden strip through the upper margin with a hanging hook. This piece is unframed. ARTIST INFORMATION: Dorothy Strauser, wife of the late Sterling Strauser, was born in 1908. Dorothy and Sterling married in 1928 and were important collectors and supporters of folk art. In her hookings Dorothy’s toy-like subjects are set among branching and interweaving arabesques. In style these paintings recall the paintings of Russian primitives as modified by Marc Chagall. Mrs. Strauser had only one course in art at Bloomsburg (Pa.) Teachers College; her teacher was George J. Keller, whose ultimate fame was not as a teacher or artist but as a lion tamer. Mrs. Strauser’s heritage was Pennsylvania Dutch and English. Dorothy exhibited at the Everhart Museum, the Burliuk Museum, the William Penn Museum, Zabriskie Gallery, the Bertha Schaeffer Gallery, and the Frank Lee Gallery. The Rozenak's book, “The Encyclopedia of 20th Cent. American Folk Art and Artists,” was dedicated to Dorothy and Sterling. DOCUMENTATION AND PROVENANCE: Lyzon Art Gallery Certificate of Authenticity included. This hooking was purchased directly from the artist.
