Edition: A Meder state B, 16th century impression Condition: This work is in very good condition, a bold, crisp impression Description:Created in 1511, this piece is one of 36 images Dürer created to illustrate a volume entitled the Engraved Passion. This work is Meder B impression and features the artist’s monogrammed initials in the plate in the lower right. Contrasting slightly from Dürer’s Small Passion series in woodcut, this Engraved Passion series is equal in subject matter and formidable in detail. Having been executed in concise precision, our scene has even more focus on shading, depth perception, and trompe l’oeil effects (see wrinkling in fabric, etc.) Focusing the viewer’s attention upon the emaciated body of Christ, the artist creates a sense of torture and loss. Practically all the figures in the image turn their heads or cover their faces in shame or grief. The artist’s intense use of detail in rendering the body of Christ heightens the visceral quality of emotion exhibited within the piece. PROVENANCE: J. Wetterauer | Stuttgart, Germany Catalogue Raisonné & COA:It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work) : 1.
