Description
Many consider Edward Weston (1886-1958) not just a gifted photographer, but one of the greatest artists this country has produced. This silver print is approximately 7” X 9”. It is a contact print, the negative being the same size as the print. The photograph was made with a large view camera in 1931. It was printed after his death by his son, Cole Weston. I have had this photograph since 1971. It came from the Lee Witkin Gallery, NYC. “The subject of Weston's "Cabbage Leaf", taken in 1931, looks like a fall of gathered cloth; a title is needed to identify it. Thus, the image makes its point in two ways. The form is pleasing, and it is (surprise!) the form of a cabbage leaf. If it were gathered cloth, it wouldn't be so beautiful. We already know that beauty, from the fine arts. Hence the formal qualities of style – the central issue in painting – are, at most, of secondary importance in photography, while what a photograph is of is always of primary importance”. (Susan Sontag, On Photography) Currently this image is selling in galleries (when available) for $5,000 to $6,500. Very hard to find these days. Although it is nicely framed I would disassemble it and ship all but the glass.
