Framed Original Drawing by Canadian Artist Lawren Stewart Harris "East Aspect of Cathedral Mountain" c.1929 The artwork: We are offering an original drawing by Group of Seven member Lawren S.Harris. The Yoho Sketch of the East Aspect of Cathedral Mountain. The drawing was part of the A.J. Casson collection. Similar works have sold at auction for over $35,000. Image size 7.13/16 x 9.15/16 inches (19.8 x 25.2 cm)approx Frame size 15. x 17. inches (38.1 x 43.2 cm)approx Graphite on Paper. Inscribed lower left and on verso A.J.Casson. Provenance: Lawren S. Harris; A.J. Casson;D.&E. Lake Ltd Fine Arts, Toronto; Private Collection, Ontario; Isman Family, Vancouver; Allan M. Davis Collection. Excellent condition. The frame shows imperfections. The artist: Canadian painter Lawren Stewart Harris was born in Brandon, Ontario October 23, 1885. Harris was instrumental in the creation of the 1920s group of national artists, "The Group of Seven" who pioneered a distinctly Canadian painting style in the early twentieth century. He painted in Atlantic Canada, the Arctic and the Rockies and was a pioneer of Canadian abstract painting in 1934 – six years before he settled in Vancouver. Through work with the Federation of Canadian Artists and as a trustee at the National Gallery of Canada, he promoted younger artists and was later honoured for his work in 1969, receiving the Order of Canada. His work is in major collections throughout Canada including the National Gallery. Harris died January 29, 1970.
