Description
HARRY FENN. AUBURNDALE RAILROAD STATION, BOSTON AND ALBANY RAILWAY. Pen and Ink with color wash on paper board. 1907. Signed lower left. Illustration for “The Railway Beautiful” an article by Sylvester Baxter for the Century Magazine published in April 1908. 19.75” X 14”. Obvious damage to corners. Some scuffing to right center. Publishers label on reverse. The drawing was engraved by C. Schwarzburger.Harry Fenn was a well known illustrator. Born in England he moved to the US in 1864. He was a contributor to William Cullen Bryant’s “Picturesque America”, “Picturesque Europe” and “Picturesque Palestine”. He was a member of the New York Watercolor Club, the Society of Illustrators, the Salmagundi Club, and was founder of the American Watercolor Society. Exhibits include: National Academy of Design, 1864, and The Brooklyn Art Association 1864-1885. Auction records show from about $500 to $4000. Drawings like this about $1000. See photosThe station was designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and Landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted. “The cooperation of Richardson and Olmsted produced delightful results. Auburndale station was later declared as the "best American example of the combination of architecture and landscape architecture" (Garden and Forest Magazine, spring 1889). The two artists were then commissioned to construct stations for the entire line, including in Allston, Newton, Wellesley and Framingham. A dozen stations were built in Newton during the 1880's, serving as monuments to the wealth and prestige of the B&A Railroad. Most,including Auburndale, wier torn down during the construction of the Mass. Turnpike.
