John Byam Shaw was born in Madras, India, in 1872, and died in London in 1919. He studied at the St. Johns Wood School of Art and at the Royal Academy School. Later, he and Rex Vicat Cole were partners in the School of Art in Campden Hill. Shaw worked in oil, watercolour, pastel, pen and ink, and also used such techniques as dyeing and gilding. He painted in the truth and sincerity style of the Pre-Raphaelites, using pure pigments that resulted in brilliant jewel tones.
