XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX This is a biography taken from the Marin-Price Gallery website about John Lewis Chapman. John Chapman Lewis  Lewis was a prominent member of the "The Washington School" (early 60's), so named after New York School, in turn derived from L'Ecole de Paris. The Washington School (also known as The Washington School of Color), dealt with the importance and the identifiable nature of color. Lewis' qualifications and accomplishments are numerous (see attached biographical sheet). He is a former teacher at The Corcoran School of Art, and professor and Resident Artist at Marymount University. Lewis resides in West Virginia Lewis's work has been included in six of the Corcoran's Biennials. His last major showing of work was at The Phillips Collection in 1973, and at The White House in an exhibition, "American Paintings from The Phillips Collection Lewis's paintings are lyrical abstractions, not depicting nature but evoking the quiet, pleasant, almost mystical emotional qualities attributed to nature. The paintings are not monochromatic but generally are dominated by a single color tone. Lewis painted with traditional oil paint thinned with turpentine on linen canvas which he primed himself. Washes of color are laid one over another to a greater or lesser degree of body. At times the washes are very thin or the canvas is left bare. The surfaces are rich and varied and beautifully controlled. The white gesso ground is the source of the luminosity which fills the canvas.
