Description
This is a figurative oil painting on canvas titled "Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors". It features Joseph and his multi-colored coat, a story told in the bible (Genesis, Chapter 37). This piece is approximately 24" high by 18" wide unframed and 33" by 27.5" framed. It is framed in a two-tone (gold and black) wood frame with an off-white fabric mat board. The artwork is hand-signed and dated by Rev. John Walch in the lower-right corner within the composition. This painting was purchased directly from the artist in 1966. Rev. Walch worked in a variety of medium, styles and sizes, but he is best known for religious compositions like the subject piece. The portrait of Joseph himself is well done and the coat itself features a crosshatch technique that adroitly illustrates the garment's hand-stitching. Rev. John L. Walch (1918-2003) had two passions in his life – his art and his faith. He achieved a degree in fine art from Loyola University; he further studied at the Chicago Art Institute. Although he eventually studied for the priesthood at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis and became a man of the cloth, he never abandoned his art and, over the course of his life, his two passions often overlapped. During his lifetime, his fine artwork was exhibited at the International Exposition of Modern Sacred Art, Rome, Italy, at the Philbrook Art Center, Oklahoma Art Center, Benedictine Heights College, Mundelein Seminary, and in traveling exhibitions throughout the US. Rev. Walch worked in multiple medias, including bronze sculpture, wood carvings, oils, casein, pastel, and charcoal. Rev. Walch's passion for art extended beyond his own work. He was a noted specialist in ecclesiastical art and amassed an extensive collection over a fifty-year period. After his death in 2003, the majority of these works were sold at auction. This painting is appraised at $4,500. More information and pictures may be made available if requested.
