Description
SUNDAY JULY 22nd 1934 WITH THE LADY IN RED ENCIRCLEDBy Richard MerkinThis work concerns the death of the American outlaw John Dillinger and is quite documentary in its intent. The contents of the painting was primarily inspired by three books on Dillinger and his criminal expoits:DILLINGER DAYS by John TollandDILLINGER: A SHORT AND VIOLENT LIFE by Robert CromieTHE DESPERATE YEARS by James D HoranAll references in the painting are factual. Purvis and Winstead were two of the FBI 'G Men' on detail that day. The quotations from the coroner and Polly Hamiliton (Dillinger's last mistress) are verbatim. Anna Sage, the infamous 'Lady in Red' is encircled as per the title. Much of the scene was inspired by a bubble gum card 'G-MEN TRACK DOWN NOTORIOUS PUBLIC ENEMY' from the series G-MEN AND HEROES OF THE LAW produced by Gum Inc. in Philadelphia in the Mid 30s. The item comes with a dated letter to the original buyer from the artist, Richard Merkin regarding the purchase of the painting.
