Born in Germany, Raymond became a US citizen and started photographing in her late thirties, after an early career as a tennis champion. She spent many years in Manhattan's Lower East Side and now lives in upstate New York. Raymond has the the ability to isolate ordinary objects and infuse into them beauty and dignity. Her works have been published in many books and monographs. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Getty Museum.
