Description
19TH C ALEXANDER HELWIG WYANT (1836-1892) SIGNED OIL ON CANVAS Description: This painting is fabulous, beautiful and beyond dispute. Its provenance is impeccable.  Painted by the well known and recognized Hudson River School Artist Alexander Helwig Wyant, it was part of a collection owned by the former Chair of Wilkes University's Sordoni Art Gallery, in Wilkes Barr Pennsylvania; it was purchased from his estate from Frank Messina, a well-known New York poet/entertainer; subsequently it was purchased by an attorney in New York, who was a Deputy Counsel and Counsel to the Senate Finance Committee; this painting is a part of her extensive Hudson River School collection.   Wyant painted the Adirondacks, scenes of the Hudson River and eventually settled in  the Catskills. Although this painting may be the artist's rendition of an area he has painted before –  Chapel Pond, it is likely one of four in a woodland series that he painted.   A university professor, who has assembled for over three decades a Wyant file containing over 1000 reference sections regarding related creations said that although he was not able to find a specific reproduction of this work, it is his belief that it probably belongs to a "fourth Woodland Group -- Part 1, c. 1887." When you look at it, it clearly is a remarkable work.  The brightly lit sun, the trees and the path leading to the water (pond?) in the distance – are all well done.  All beautiful and with vibrant colors, the brush strokes all intricately woven to make a spectacular impressionist landscape painting. Wyant first painted realism, but like his mentor Innis, he transitioned to a Barbizon tonalist style. After starting out as one of the top tier second generation Hudson River Artists, he suffered a stroke and as a result was not able to paint with his right hand.   This led to an acceleration toward the tonalist/impressionist style which he had begun.  George Innis, traveled a similar career path from realism to impressionism and tonalism, and his influence and the influence of the Barbizon School, can be seen in much of Wyant's work.   This painting clearly stands out as one of the very best works that any of the Hudson River School impressionist painters produced. The subtle tonalist qualities and the brilliant dots of the painters brush served to produce a breathtaking masterpiece.    The wooden, gesso, partial gilt frame is also massive and beautiful; I do not believe it is original, but it perfectly showcases this spectacular acquisition. There is a small area that is loose on the top left corner of the frame. The painting measures 22 inches by 24 inches; the frame is 4 1/2 inches wide (framed the painting measures 26 1/2 inches by 28 1/2 inches). The high water mark for his paintings a few years ago was over $110,000 Free shipping is to any of the 48 states continental United States; all other areas will require further inquiry. Please look at the pictures; ask questions before bidding. This painting can be returned with notice and within three days of receipt, if this painting is not significantly as described; shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer and this painting must be undamaged and completely untouched.  Thank you.
