Description
Magnificent RUFINO TAMAYO Signed 1934 Drawing - RARE This is a magnificent original, museum-quality, signed graphite on brown paper drawing by internationally acclaimed artist RUFINO TAMAYO (Mexican, 1900-1991), dated 1934. A highly important Latin American artist, Rufino Tamayo's brilliant career spanned seven decades. The celebrated Mexican painter, along with his notable contemporaries, Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, embodied the spirit of his country's 20th-century art and was the focus of international attention. Tamayo enrolled at the Academy of Art in San Carlos in 1917, but was primarily self-taught. In 1921, he was appointed head of the ethnographic drawing in the Mexican Anthropological Museum. While working on this job, Tamayo came in close contact with the indigenous tribes of Mexico, and was deeply impressed by their culture and traditions. He held his first exhibition in Mexico in 1926, and then left to work in New York, not returning until 1929. He was then given a position at the School of Fine Arts, and was commissioned to do a mural in Mexico City in 1933. He went back to New York in 1938, and remained there the better part of his career. This extraordinary drawing, "Seated Figure", is signed in pencil by the artist on the front lower left, "Tamayo" and dated "34". It measures 9 ½" x 13" and is framed in magnificent custom made gold leafed wood frame with a linen mat and gold inset bevel for a total size of 20 ½" x 24". It is in good condition aside from a slight crease across the center. It comes directly from the estate of a Latin American art collector and is fully GUARANTEED to be genuine and as described. Davenport's lists a 9" x 14" drawing by Tamayo at $38,500. A similar, but less interesting, 12" x 14" drawing was offered recently at Sotheby's, New York with an estimated value of $25,000.- $35,000. Gallery retail prices are always much higher. Please scroll down on the item description to view additional photographs. Payment is due within 7 days.
