Description
NORMAN LINDSAY 1879-1969 'DOWN THE DIM YEARS' This beautiful collotype of a pen drawing was created for 'Satyrs & Sunlight' published in 1928 by the Fanfrolico Press, in an edition of 550 copies. This image comes from number 356. It is printed on Barcham Greens handmade paper and is signed in the plate. It is in excellent condition and comes with our Certificate of Authenticity which details its origin. Image Size: (approx) 20cms x 16cms Sheet Size: 29.5cms x 23cms Note: The watermark of my id is not on the actual image. COLLECTING NORMAN LINDSAY PRINTS Norman Lindsay is probably the most collected artist in Australia. His oils, watercolours and original prints have now appreciated in value beyond the means of most buyers. Accordingly, printed images produced during his lifetime are now the most affordable. Lindsay created, selected and collated many images for publication in books and portfolios. In most cases, these are the only source of the images. Publication of these images reached their peak in the 1920s when Lindsay was involved with the Fanfrolico Press. The majority of the publications were limited editions, some as small as 60 copies, of which very few still remain. It is unusual to find these books in good condition, without foxing, insect or water damage. Many have missing plates which have been removed for framing. The rarity of many of the images has made them highly collectable and they continue to rise in value. It is interesting to note that Limited Edition Facsimile Etchings seem to be good investments even though they were produced after Lindsay's death and clearly without his involvement. However, I do not sell them, because they are not lifetime impressions. COLLOTYPE Collotype is the most accurate and beautiful method of reproduction yet invented. It has the advantage that it can render continuous graduations of tone without the intervention of a screen. But the making and printing of collotype plates is skilled and expensive work and can easily go wrong. Variations in humidity are likely to upset the balance of moisture in the gelatin causing it to swell or shrink. The surface is too delicate to produce more than two thousand impressions. For these reasons, collotype was used for luxury art publications and since World War II, has been largely abandoned for other commercial printing processes.
