Description
Edwin Howland Blashfield american 1848-1936) "Portrait if the Artist's Wife, Evangeline Wilboour Blashfield" 1889; Oil on Canvas; Signed and dated in lower left of face "Edwin Howland Blashfield Mai 1889"' 64"x69" modern parcel gilt reeded wood fram 75"x80" overall. Exhibited: Paris International Exposition, May-November 1889 (catalog number 18) where it won the Bronze Medal Award. Literature and illustration: Annette Blaugrund "Paris 1889: American Artists at the Universal Exposition" published by Harry Abrams, pages 114-115 and illustrated in color on page 269 (number 19). In the tex Ms Blaugrund says "Portrait of the Artist's Wife conveys the personal background of the sitter.  Blashfield's first wife Evangeline, daughter of Charles Wilbur, journalist, translator and Egyptologist, and Charlotte Beebee Wilbour, writer and feminist. Details in the picture allude to Evangeline's remarkable family: the sphinx on the sofa and the ancient coin sleeve clasp to her father's profession, the loose gown to her moth's interest in dress reform, and the interior as a whole to Evangeline's own involvement in the arts. The Blashfields, with A.A. Hopkins, edited a version of Vasari's LIVES".
