EUGENE SMITH photo: DR. SCHWEITZERS HANDS' Description This is an ORIGINAL W. EUGENE SMITH photograph. Written on the reverse in pencil is "Schweitzer's Hands." The Schweitzer photo essay was originally conceived by Life Magazine as an essay about the leper settlement at Lambarene, in French Equatorial Africa. Smith's attention focused on the famous doctor, Albert Schweitzer. Photographed in 1954, this photo shows Schweitzer's hands grasping a chain. Life Magazine published the photo-essay on November 15, 1954, under the title "Man of Mercy." This is a master print made by Mr. Smith from his private collection, the reverse bears a rectangular estate stamp with the legend "This authenticated photograph by W. Eugene Smith was in his private collection at his death, October 15, 1978". In the lower left front of the image in the white border, the word "toned" is lightly pencilled and underlined. A vintage silver gelatin print, the photo measures 14" by 11" with a 13 1/2" by 8 3/4" image. The photo is corner mounted within a 16" by 20" matte board. This item is in excellent condition. There is a smudge on the reverse in the middle right edge that looks like mold but is dry and doesn't smear. This does not affect the front of the image in anyway that I can see. Please look at the description photos. My photo was taken at an angle to reduce the glare which is why it is not square. The matte has some stray marks but nothing affects the image.
