If you have been watching my auctions then you know I have listed many Outsider Folk Art Paintings on site over the past week or so. I will be listing a few more Original Outsider Art Paintings by Outsider Artists, Mose T, R.A. Miller and J. Sudduth. These paintings were all from one mans private collection, in which the majority were bought direct from the artist or local neighbors.
This auction is for two authentic original Jimmy Lee Sudduth portraits. They both have green trimmed shirts and have a gritty Mud paint Sudduth Paintings are know for. The Girl has longer hair measures 13 ½ by 15 ½ and is on ½ thick plywood. The boy with shorter hair measures 11 by 17 ½ on 3/8 thick plywood. Both are signed in the lower left hand corners in pencil JMS and they are in very good original condition. There is some minor blemishes to the white paint, but thats it, no other damages or repairs.
Self-taught African-American artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth died on September 2, 2007 at the age of 97. Mr. Sudduth was internationally renowned for his inventive and joyful mud paintings on plywood. Born in Caines Ridge, Alabama in 1910, Sudduth first began painting with mud when he was three, and was fond of saying that he could identify 36 different shades of mud around his rural Alabama home. He augmented his mud images with the colors created by grasses, wild berries, and housepaint. His subjects ranged from Southern mansions and cotton picking to self-portraits, his beloved dog Toto (of which there were several), and New York City skyscrapers. .
