According to Deb, the connotation of visual creativity does not hold on to any ‘ism’ or style, but is an outcome of spontaneous playfulness happening as a process of introspection and submission. He has had several solo shows in Kolkata in the year ’74, ’76, ’78, and ’81. In 2001 “Works in Paper” was shown by CIMA Gallery. Besides, he has participated in an exhibition of ‘Stained Glass’ organized by Faculty of Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and “Art of Heart’ workshop dedicated to unfortunate children with heart disease. His work has been as a collection with the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Delhi Art Gallery.Sunil De, born 1948De has graduated from Government College of Arts, Kolkata in 1975. He has had several one man shows and group shows in every major metropolitan cities of India since 1976. Yet participation in Banga Sanskriti Sammelan, Calcutta Metropolitan Festival of Art, 1995 and Millennium Festival of Art in 2000 are some of the prestigious ones in his career. His most recent participation has been at the Singapore Art Festival, 2006.Sunil De is essentially an abstract painter who sees non-figurative forms within figurative manifestations. It is like a sudden revelation where matter breaks into colours forming a visual music of sequences of warmth and coldness.Partha Pratim Deb expresses his art through many different medium including small abstract vignettes scratched out postcards, large bas-relief assemblages on board, oil on canvas paintings as well as delicate yet powerful ink on paper works. His ink on paper works evoke an impressive complexity through simplicity, akin to Paul Klee's 'taking a line for a walk' drawings. Deb possesses qualities of a master draftsman, for example a single line, straight and horizontal, can become the horizon, the hull of a boat, the division of two dimensional space or a roof top. Similarly twenty or more, streaming in parallel across a page, can create a flag, shimmering water or a rolling hill. These elements make his work instantly recognizable and extremely engaging.Partha Pratim Deb's paper works show his individual humor and sharp wit. Even when he depicts well known subject matter, such as Adam and Eve, it is done so in his own distinct style. This amalgamation of humor, social reality and sensuality along with a creative playfulness is visible in all of his works. This is one of the many reasons why his work is praised both in India and abroad and his work is included in the collections of major museums including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and the Delhi Art Gallery, New Delhi.Deb is an important figure within Indian contemporary art not only for his artistic output but also for his pedagogical input. Born in 1943 Deb completed his education in Fine Arts and Craft from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan followed by a post diploma from the Faculty Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda. He went on to become the Dean and Professor in painting at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and has written numerous papers on art education.
