Visit our store! Offered here is a Rare Artist’s Edition Original Etching from the Introduction Page of Picasso’s “Le Chef D’Oeuvre Inconnu”, which was printed in 1931. We brought this piece to the Philadelphia Museum of Art who authenticated it as being a Rare Artist’s Edition. Don’t miss your chance to own this Rare Engraving by Picasso! “Le Chef D’Oeuvre Inconnu” or “The Unknown Masterpiece” was a book by Balzac published in 1931 and is a story about an obsessive artist and his quest for truth and perfectionism. Picasso illustrated this centenary edition and purchased the studio that was one of the settings of this book. This plate is found in the introduction and features Picasso’s preliminary sketches for each page of the book, made in 1927. This particular centenary edition of “Le Chef D’Oeuvre Inconnu” was published by Ambroise Vollard in 1931 and consisted of 340 copies with 13 etchings (this is one of the etchings) and 67 drawings engraved on wood by Aubert. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a leader of the Cubist Art Movement and is widely known today for his expressive portraits and still lifes. This series exhibits the height of his cubist style, mixed with surrealism, when he often used a Minotaur as a motif, as seen in the III plate. We have included a copy of the Catalogue Raisonné given to us by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for reference. Unsigned. Hand written “74-AK” in pencil at bottom of paper with two faint x marks at left corner. Hand written in pencil “Picasso; Chef D’Oeuvre Inconnu Introduction”. Mat is marked with a hand written “53” at lower left corner. Etching is printed on a thick stock paper with uncut edges. Framed within a window mat with hinged tape at top of paper. Item is in excellent condition; very minor yellowing/foxing to paper. Overall yellowing/foxing to mat with bumped edges. Mat measures approximately 13.75" high, 10.75" wide and 3/4" thick.
