Description
This original Fresco Secco (earth painting) on masonite, by Pablita Velarde was purchased in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1965. Because my husband's business kept us on the move, nationally and internationally, the paintings have been in commercial van and storage and have never been hung in the light. This painting is titled "Monster Slayer". On the back of the frame, which I believe to be in Pablita's handwriting it says "Pablita Velarde: Monster Slayer: May 15, 1965." This was framed by Pablita and outside measurements are approximately 13-1/2" X 16". The painting inside measurements are approximately 9-1/4" X 11-3/4". There are variations in the pigment and there are some marks near the bottom edge and below the monster's left arm (can be seen in picture 4). I would think a water mark, but because of its history it must have developed in the pigment. The frame is of very soft wood and very lightly painted (original). The frame is roughly put together and marks and dings show through the paint. I remember when I bought the painting the frame looked rough. This is one of a pair and I am also offering its mate in this auction. "Monster Slayer" has been accepted by Bonham and Butterfield for their December native American auction and I have placed a reasonable reserve on it.
