An authentic Pablo Picasso Madoura piece, it is marked on the back side with the words: "EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO"', "MADOURA PLEIN FEU"' and, marked in black "C.110". This piece is listed in the following catalogs: Georges Bloch. Pablo Picasso, Catalogue de l'oeuvre grave céramique 1949-1971. Tome III: 1972. Cat 88, p. 74 Alain Ramie. Picasso Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947-1971. 1988, cat. 318, p. 319 Purchased in 1960 in Spain, at the Madoura Gallery, the plate (and frame) has been kept in pristine condition. There is a minor flaw (there when purchased): a chip along the left back plate edge (visible in detail foto below). It has been recently cleaned by a top Chicago art restorer. from the Picasso Museum in Malaga:Pablo Picasso began to work intensively with ceramics in 1946. To him, it meant a return to the millenary tradition of ceramics in the Mediterranean region. Picasso had always felt strongly attached to this tradition, to its motifs and depictions, and was equally fascinated by the mysteries of pottery-making and the importance of fire in the transformation of material substances, leading to a metamorphosis of the object. Over a period of 20 years, Picasso collaborated with local artisans in Vallauris to produce his ceramic works. These singular works reinterpret the archaic techniques of pottery in terms of both modeling and decoration, and allowed him to explore an ancient civilization that reminded of his native Spain, its customs and its colors.
