It is mounted on a pineboard frame and has plywood backing.         Paco Felici is a very popular, well listed (AskArt, Bluebook of American Artists, etc.) and well reviewed (Dallas Morning News, Austin American-Statesman, Houston Press, Austin Chroncile, Texas Observer) self-taught Texas artist whose work straddles the lines of pop, folk, and Latin-influenced art. Our current and upcoming auctions feature striking, museum-quality offerings by this increasingly popular artist. This is one of Felici's earliest pieces, made about 1998 or 1999. While he came to quick prominence though paintings of sports figures and other notables, he has since quit making these types of "tribute" pieces and his style has notably departed toward more representation and abstract pieces (see our other auctions). These relatively early pieces in Felici's art career are becoming increasingly desirable and difficult to come by, as collectors have tended to hold on to them. We only have a handful of these early pieces, which have been in storage for a number of years. This piece does have some slight surface wear at the top, but overall excellent and, frankly, photos do not do justice to how bright and bold it is. Highly prolific and with a bold, instantly recognizable trademark style, a 2004 review by the Dallas Morning News likened him to "an Andy Warhol with a Latin flair." Art guides and reviewers have even invented dubious terms like "iconic-ironic" to categorize his style. Collectors often debate whether he is to be categorized as a folk or modern artist.
