Created in 1954, this ceramic turned vase was created from white earthenware clay. It was intricately decorated in engobes and paraffin, with boring-rod engraving on white enamel with black and beige. Numbered 9/300 on the bottom of the base, this work contains guaranteed authentic ‘Edition Picasso’ and ‘Madoura’ Stamps on the bottom of the base. Written onto the base is also the text, ‘Edition Picasso’. Constructed with a slender vase opening and traditionally wide base, this is a very large scale Madoura ceramic, measuring 18.5” (46.99 cm) tall. The black, beige, and white decorate is truly exquisite. In this piece, Picasso has combined flat surface and incised decorative areas that create alternating areas of depth within the work. The matte and glossy glazes add the diverse decorative styles of the work. The simplified smiling figure is cheerful and imaginative, and it reflects Picasso’s ongoing interest in twentieth century “primitivism,” also understood as the reduction of form to its most basic, or primitive, state. FREESTANDING VASE PLACEMENT:A freestanding ceramic vase is best enjoyed in an environment where it is accessible from all sides. Pedestals are often an appropriate way to showcase larger ceramic pieces. In some instances collectors have chosen to encase the freestanding ceramic under traditional museum bonnets. Museum bonnets are transparent acrylic cubes constructed with one open side that can be placed over the ceramic as an added layer of protection from an unpredictable environment. If you are placing the ceramic in an area where it might be touched or disturbed, the museum bonnet is an excellent conservation solution that can be custom made to fit over your ceramic.
