This work is an artist's proof aside from the edition of 50. Also inscribed on the face of the plate, the date: '1.7.59.' Condition: In excellent condition  Description:This expressive and lively scene perfectly translates the energy and excitement that can be felt within a bull-fighting arena in Spain. The subtle and minimal details are enough to encompass what Picasso wanted to convey with this work: the bravery of both the picadors and the fallen bull. This appears to capture the precise moment in which the bull has been slain and the victory of the picadors are being celebrated as they ride around the arena on their horses. The background is dotted with the heads of the crowded stands, as the audience cheers on the excitement and action below them. The red undertones of the earthenware clay provides a striking and bold background to Picasso's thick, black engobe detail, allowing it to leap from the dish and place us within the arena itself. Created on July 1, 1959, this round dish was published by Madoura, whose publisher's stamp can be seen on the reverse, 'Madoura Plein Feu' in addition to the stamp, 'Edition Picasso.' Made of red, earthenware clay, it has been decorated in engobes with black coloring. Out of the edition of 50 numbered copies, it has been inscribed on the reverse, 'Exemplaire d'Editeur' in black (or 'Editor's Example.' In other words, an artist's proof) . An additional engraving is located on the face of the dish referencing the date of creation, '1.7.59.' Catalogue Raisonné & COA:It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that I will enclose with the sale of the work) : 1. Listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonné no. 147 on pgs. 124-5. 2. Ramié, Alain. Picasso, Catalogue of the Edited Ceramic Works 1947-1971, Galerie Madoura: Vallauris, 1988. Listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonné no. 431 on pg. 227. 3. Ramié, Georges. Picasso's Ceramics, Viking Press: New York, 1976. Listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonné no. 566 on pg. 220. About the Framing:This resplendent custom frame is the perfect, elegant compliment to this remarkable work. Framing begins with linen-wrapped wooden liners that securely hold the ceramic and allow visibility in the back (to view markings) . An elegant varnished gold leaf frame encases the wood liners to create a shadow-box affect against a black background. The delicate coloration of the wood moulding perfectly compliments the gentle texture and color within the clay. A heavy weight picture wire is also attached to the frame to ensure a secure hanging. Due to the size and weight of this piece, we recommend using a heavy duty double nail hook with 100-150 pound weight capacity (double the weight of the piece to determine hook capacity) .
