Created in 1963, this ceramic turned vase is constructed from red earthenware clay, with engobe decoration in black. This work contains guaranteed authentic ‘Edition Picasso’ and ‘Madoura’ Stamps on the bottom of the base. Written into the glaze is also the text, ‘Edition Picasso Madoura 203/300’ in black. The marking are pristine and the glaze is reflective and fresh, this work is in wonderful condition! Using a standard symmetrical vase form, Picasso utilizes the classic form to create a totem-like portrait of a figure and a bird. The face of the figure emerges from the roundest portion of the vase, with the brow and nose lines bisecting the center of the pitcher. Picasso uses the pour spout to create a falcon-like bird profile. The two portraits interact gracefully with one another—their elegance enhanced by the rich red earthenware medium, that acts as background to the black decoration.
