Bringing Genuine Scrimshaw from the Waterfront of Newport Rhode Island to you! Scrimshaw: The History The tradition of scrimshaw began in the 1700’s with American whaleman. During long sea voyages, whalers devoted their idle hours to fashioning jewelry and articles from whale bone and whale teeth (ivory). This became known as Scrimshaw. The first scrimshaw was made from whale ivory or bone, but sailors traveling from place to place, picked up and used ivory from many other sources. . Other ivories were walrus, seal, elephant, wart hog and hippo.  Modern artists use many different materials, primarily ancient ivories such as wooly mammoth, mastodon, and fossilized or mineralized walrus ivory. Additionally, there are many laws governing, what may and may not be used.  Brian Kiracofe: The Artist The art of scrimshaw is still practiced today at Newport Scrimshanders in Newport, RI. Owner/Artist Brian J. Kiracofe established Newport Scrimshanders in 1986.  Brian began scrimshaw as a hobby, the hobby turned into a full time profession and he has been engraving amazing nautical scenes on ancient walrus, prehistoric mammoth and recycled piano key ivory for over 25 years. It is most incredible to watch Brian at work.  The minute detailing which Scrimshaw requires is done by Brian with his naked eye.  It is difficult even after watching him to believe that the intricate hand detailing of the artwork produces such amazing results.   100 % Customer Satisfaction Guarantee or your Money Back.
