Early impressions such as this, most likely produced in Amsterdam, have rough plate edges (Boon & White B306) . Accenting his prominent facial features by placing him in profile allows Rembrandt to imply that this gentleman may have been an important dignitary in his earlier life, successful once before but in his old age, has allowed himself to take a break. Prominent shading just under his cheek bone and brows add to his characteristic expression, along with tufts of hair that spring up just behind the crown of his head and down along his collar; these techniques are quintessential Rembrandt, his shading abilities and use of light to illuminate even the smallest crevices bring out the most detail in both the subject and the portrait. During this period of Rembrandt’s life, he may have been fascinated and even envious of old age, as recent deaths in his own family allowed him to reflect on the direction of his own life and the effect of age both internally and externally. All of these observations and contemplation were translated beautifully in this profile of the Bald Old Man with a Short Beard.
