Description
REMBRANDT HARMENSZ VAN RIJN (DUTCH, 1606-1669) Title: Virgin and Child in the Clouds Year: 1641 Medium: Original etching and drypoint printed in black ink on laid paper. Dimensions: Platemark: 6 9/16 x 4 3/16 Sheet Size: 6 11/16 x 4 5/16 inches. Bartsch 61 only; Hind 186; Biorklund 41- H; Usticke 61 i/ii Provenance: Ex-collection Johann Carl Diedrich Hebich (German, 1818-1891), known for his superb collection of prints by Rembrandt and Durer, with his collection stamp (Lugt 1250) in black ink on the verso; Ex-collection Charles M Lea (american, 1853-1927), with his collection stamp (Lugt 1662a) in grey ink verso. Condition: In excellent condition, printed on a sheet with small margins outside the platemark on all four sides. Value: $28,900.00 This was the appraised value on date of acquisition on December 30, 2004. Description: Printed after the diagonal scratches on either side of the virgin' face were burnished out. A fine 17th century/lifetime impression of Bartsch's only state, Usticke's second and final state. The only possible source for this motif - a particularly Catholic subject unparalleled in Dutch Art of the 17th century - is an etching by Frederico Barocci. There are even similarities in execution (ie: the hatching). The upside down face under the Virgin's knee, generally regarded as a poorly erased remnant of an unfinished etching Rembrandt started on the same plate, should probably be interpreted as a reflection of Mary's face in the clouds. This rare and valuable work of art comes with the orignal Certificate of Authenticity... a lifetime guarentee of authenticity... from place of purchase: Stanfield Fine Art, located in Park City, Utah.
