Description
This is a fabulous photograph by Aaron Siskind from his famed Harlem Document Series, signed and in excellent condition. Image measured 11 x 8 inches, printed on 14 x 11 inch paper and is titled "Night Club I" in unknown hand on verso. Negative made in 1937, print done 1976c. LOW STARTING PRICE WITH NO RESERVE! The Harlem Document series is a distillation of three projects Aaron Siskind did during 1932 - 1940. Siskind first started photographing in Harlem after joining the Photo League in 1932. He continued this record during his participation in the League's Feature Group. And finally, it contained work from a project he called "The Most Crowded Block" shot between 1939 and 1940. The idea was to show the diverse aspects of the culturally rich Harlem community, the famous and infamous New York City neighborhood long known for it's vibrancy and strength while struggling with poverty and racial oppression. After 1940, the series was largely forgotten. There are few, if any, vintage prints extant. Then, in 1976, Light Gallery decided to publish 30 photographs in an edition of 50, known as the Harlem Document Portfolio. The photographs were printed on 11 x 14 inch paper by Michaela Murphy of the George Eastman House, and signed by Aaron Siskind. This print is one from that series.
