Description
UNSIGNED POSTCARD with Saint Michael [ Priebe Era] 3 1/4" x 5 1/2" I unwittingly accepted this card in a stack of 'Priebe' Postcards as all being done by the American Painter Karl Priebe, 1914-1976. He was part of the Wisconsin Surrealists of the 1930's and 1940's. I misrepresented the first 3 postcards I listed on Ebay [wouldn't you know it]. This 'unsigned one' may not be an actual Priebe. It is of the style of the other 2 currently listed. They're signed 'V' or return addressed V. M. Burnett who is apparently the artist's contemporary and mutual friend of the addressee. They both corresponded with the Halline's during the same period in the same manner- the illustrated post card. WE DO HAVE A LOT OF KARL PRIEBE POSTCARDS. A catalog of 49 postcards and 1 painting by Priebe Please look this week for sales by lot in our store. I'm organizing them at this time * SAINT MICHAEL is viewed as the good Angel of Death (as opposed to Samael, the evil Angel of Death), and as the field commander of the Army of God His name was said to have been the war-cry of the angels in the battle fought in heaven against Satan and his followers. In late medieval Christianity, Michael, together with St George, became the patron saints of chivalry, and of the first chivalric order of France, the Order of Saint Michael of 1469. St. Michael is also considered in many Christian circles as the patron saint of the warrior. Police officers and soldiers, particularly paratroopers, regard him as their patron saint. In the War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, Michael is described as the prince of light, leading forces of good against the darkness of evil. *********************************************** We have a catalog of 38 postcards and 1 painting by Priebe to put on Ebay. Most of the cards are to either Mr. and Mrs.[Edward P. and Adris] Halline. He was a music critic for the Wisconsin Centennial. Priebe was a good freind of the couple and close friend to the wife, Adris. I have them organized into groups: 1). People [the largest group]. 2). Birds [9] 3). Greeting Cards [Christmas, Easter, & Valentines Day]. One Christmas 'page' appears to be a self portrait [reclining]. I'm guessing Karl is a 'down' Christmas tree. It's signed twice Karl 1958; & K. P. 58- complementary colors of red & green. 4). He painted on the other side a commercially printed card. It has an arial view of the Hotel Hunington, Pasadena, California, dated Dec. 9, 1951. It's signed Karl. 5). Another 'single type' card printing of one of his painting . It's signed. 6.) The [3] cards on now. 2 of St Michael and 1 of a harlequin/ jester. I haven't taken time yet to cross research people names, places and dates; This is the hold up. Please look this week for sales by lot in our store. ************************************************ Come by our store ASK AS MANY QUESTIONS AS YOU LIKE about any item.
