Description
Superb JULES PASCIN Original 1917 Drawing "Female Nude" Click to View Image Album This is a MAGNIFICENT original pencil on paper drawing by internationally acclaimed artist JULES PASCIN (1885-1930), circa 1917. American painter, b. Bulgaria. Born Julius Pincas, Jules Pascin moved to Paris in 1905. From 1905 to 1929, he worked as a satirical cartoonist for a Munich weekly. From 1914 to 1920, he lived in America and became a U.S. citizen. He traveled extensively in the southern states and portrayed downtrodden segments of society. In 1920, he returned to Paris where he was a colorful and generous character in bohemian Parisian society, and from there, traveled throughout Europe and North Africa. He changed his mediums from watercolor and drawing to oil. Suffering from depression and alcoholism, he committed suicide in his studio in Montmartre in 1930. “He stands out in this drab, preoccupied, modern world of ours with such startling brilliance that at times it actually seems as though no one alive but he possesses real talent. He is naughty. He's quite scandalous. But he is also very, very, very great. I take off my hat to Jules Pascin, for as a critic of art I have an immense respect for his priceless qualities of expression, at the same time that I wrap my cloak about me, in my stern character as a defender of the virtues, and peer about to see that no one watches as I gloat over the pictures." Henry McBride’s review of Pascin exhibition, New York Herald Tribune, 1923. This fantastic drawing is entitled “Nu”, and dates from circa 1917. It is estate stamped with the atelier and artist’s signature stamps on the front lower right. It is in apparent good condition (it has not been examined out of the frame), measures 8” x 10 ½” (sight), and is matted and framed in a gold leafed wood frame for a total size of 14 ¼” x 17 ½” (there is some wear to the frame).
