Description
This piece has a great provenance. It was purchased in the 80's and exhibited at the forefront of the CIRCLE DANCE retrospective for John at the New Orleans Museum of Art in May, 2005. The piece entitled, "Through Lulu White's Window", represents a multitude of awareness, a young boy coming of age, a curious visitor, in the Storyville era of New Orleans. Lulu White was a famous New Orleans Madam and entrepreneur of that period, who operated a famous brothel called "Mahogony Hall", where she claimed to hire only Octoroons. She was particularly fond of musicians, and she helped many musicians of her time. Many movies and books have represented her and her brothel, including PRETTY BABY. John T. Scott died on September 4, 2007. He was born on a farm in Gentilly and raised in the lower 9th ward, a particularly sentimental area from the Katrina circumstances. he studied with Charles Pollack, jackson Pollock's brother, and his art was influenced by African, Carribean and Southern Creole Cultures. In it is reflected his love of music and dance. Awarded th Genius Grant from the Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, as well as many other honors, he remained a great lecturer and was a beloved professor at Xavier University in New Orleans. After evacuatin Hurricane Katrina, much of his work was vandalized and destroyed. Most pieces now reside with private collectors or national museums.
