Sur la plage is an intimate portrait of the middle-upper classes of French society, one of which Toulouse-Lautrec was foreign to but felt an incredible attachment and fascination with. Carrying a comical and light-hearted undertone, these varying scenes and vignettes allow the work to carry a full-bodied and meaningful portrayal of how the artist viewed and perceived life "On the Beach." Created in c. 1880, this unique pen and ink drawing allows us formidable insight into Toulouse-Lautrec's life as an artist prior to his more iconic poster works of the 1890s. Here we see a series of figures at the beach, seemingly engaging in everyday activities of putting on shoes, hanging a towel, etc. Central to the composition, however, we see a senior figure draped in a cape and presented in profile; his assistant is shown at his heels, ready to aid him to prepare for a day at the beach. This is an intimate portrait of what can also be seen as a set of figural studies that Toulouse-Lautrec readily engaged in during this period. Expressiveness of line, a well-balanced composition, and heartfelt realism shows us he indeed had all the classical characteristics of an artist of his day; these pieces became a pre-cursor and foundation for his theatre works and more recognizable depictions of the Moulin Rouge and bohemian Paris of the late 1800s.
