Bruce Davidson is a photographer who has long been a strong presence in the spectrum of 20th Century photography. Over a 45-year career he has produced one of its most visually poetic, diverse, and meaningful bodies of work. Henry Geldzahler, the former Curator of Modern Art at the Metropolitan Museum, New York, has said: 'The ability to enter so sympathetically into what seems superficially an alien environment remains Bruce Davidson's sustained triumph; in his investigation he becomes the friendly recorder of tenderness and tragedy.' Davidson was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1933. His mother was a single parent who, during World War II, worked in a factory to support her two sons, and who raised her boys to become self-sufficient yet sensitized to the plight of others less fortunate than themselves. As a youth, Davidson discovered photography and was given the freedom to explore the streets of the city alone with his camera. He apprenticed to a local commercial photographer, honing his technical skills and learning printing and lighting. At the age of 16 he won first prize in the Kodak National High School snapshot contest with an image of an owl that he photographed at a nature preserve near his home. Upon graduation from high school, he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and, after graduation, continued his studies at Yale University. His college thesis pictured the emotion of football players behind the scenes of the game: it was published in LIFE magazine in October 1955. Later he was drafted into the Army and stationed in Paris. Here he met Henri Cartier-Bresson and the young Davidson presented his portfolio to the Magnum founder. After military service, he freelanced with LIFE for a year before joining the Magnum agency in 1958. Each of Davidson's bodies of work reflects his frame of mind at the time: an open process that leads him into worlds wherein he explores and uncovers layers of life that are often in transition. His images have a varied formal vitality that expresses the human condition in a lyrical visual language that is his own. We see in his work both dignity and despair; his photography functions as a point where loneliness, compassion, and social concerns are brought into focus. This work presents the opportunity to own a piece of photography that will undoubtly become more valuable over time. This piece is being deaccessioned from a major private collection of museum quality photography.
