A NOTE TO NEW COLLECTORS: This auction page photo scan does not begin to represent the beauty and quality of the vintage Alfred Cheney Johnston photographic portrait that is for sale here. Actual prints are exquisitely beautiful to behold. One curator, upon seeing a collection of Johnston photos proclaimed: "They were so beautiful they made me shiver." "Cheney" (pronounced "Sheeny") as he was known by friends, emulated the lighting of old master painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer, while at the same time incorporating the design principle of "The Line of Beauty" espoused by Englishman John Ruskin. That is, he intentionally formed the "lines" of his portrait compositions in "S" forms (such as placement of hands or drapery) to create the most beautiful compositional effects. In bidding on this photograph, you are in fact, bidding on a work of art by an American Master photographer. In January of 1923, VANITY FAIR editor Frank Crowninshield named Johnston, along with Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz, one of ten Master American Portrait Photographers. For more information about collecting Alfred Cheney Johnston's remarkable photography, please check out the COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO ALFRED CHENEY JOHNSTON, compiled by Robert Hudovernik, author of JAZZ AGE BEAUTIES- The Lost Collection of Alfred Cheney Johnston, in our other auctions. Now is an excellent time to be collecting and investing in Johnston's photography. With prints by Edward Steichen selling for $200,000.00 or more each, ACJ prints are an incredible bargain for collectors of period photography from the 1920's-30's. Please contact us if you have any questions about ACJ, or if you have any information about him. If you are interested in receiving our FREE ACJ Newsletter, please write us.
