"Cheney" (pronounced "Sheeny") as he was known by friends, emulated the lighting of old master painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer, while at the same time incorporating the design principle of "The Line of Beauty" espoused by Englishman John Ruskin. That is, he intentionally formed the "lines" of his portrait compositions in "S" forms (such as placement of hands or drapery) to create the most beautiful compositional effects.
