Description
Vintage 1904 Edward S. Curtis Navaho Platinum PrintThe Vansihing RaceSigned & Blindstamped 8x10 inches Rare, original, vintage platinum photograph on matte paper. Curtis's iconic, signature image, published as Plate #1 of Curtis's North American Indian from Portfolio Number 1 (Apache, Navaho, Jicarilla Apache). Signature at lower right in red is visible in raking light. The first blindstamp embossed at lower left of the border area reads, Copyrighted 1904 by E.S. Curtis. The second, at the far lower left corner of the mount reads The Curtis Studio Seattle. Print area is in fine condition. A near pristine example with a flawless image surface, wonderful tonality and beautiful, ruddy brown color. Outermost border area near lower left square blindstamp shows a dampstain. This is well clear of the image and is totally concealed by the overmat. Dimensions: 5.9 x 7.9 inches (image area); 7.9 x 9.6 inches (outer border); 10.6 x 12.1 inches (full object) The platinum print is often regarded as the highest form of the photographic print. Prized for its infinite tonality from the deepest blacks to the brightest whites and an endless expression of midtones, the platinum photograph is also the most permanent, far exceeding even silver prints for archival stability. This print is an excellent example of the beauty and power of the medium. A breathtaking print to behold in person. This may be what is known as a "border print." The varying browns of the border areas are actually printed in to give the illusion of a triple overmat. It's interesting to note that the photographer Imogen Cunningham worked as a printer for Curtis in his Fourth Avenue downtown Seattle studio at this time. It's exciting to ponder the possibility that Cunningham may well have made this very print. She went on to a remarkable career and is celebrated for her stunning platinum prints. The last known sale of this print was reported by the Etherton Gallery at AIPAD Miami in December 2007. In its original piecrust frame, it sold for $12,500. Mounted with archival corners (object freely removable) in an acid free museum window mat.
