Description
maureenfs Store Vintage WW I Calvary Drawing Signed Webb Gillen Estate I went to an auction recently in Kankakee Illinois. This was an estate auction for a person who had moved into an assisted living facility. Her family had many artists in its past and a huge archive of their works were found up in the attic, and in closets of the house. Dating from the late 1800’s to the 1930’s, I purchased a large collection of the art pieces and will be listing them for a while. Some are signed, some are not, but all come from a family whose names included Webb and Gillen. This was quite a talented family, and they created these fabulous pieces of country folk art that I’m happy to share with you. Be sure to keep checking for the others. I was able to talk to the auctioneer following the auction and collect a small amount of information on the family, as was able to find a little more on ancestry.com. This one is an incredibly striking drawing that is signed on the back "August R. Webb, 1931." August R. Webb was born in 1888 in Roberts Illinois. I was able to find that he registered for the draft in 1917 during WW I. I was unable, however, to find record of whether or not he actually served. My hunch is yes, as this is the subject of his drawing. Done in what I believe is chalk on some type of heavy layered board (heavier than cardboard, and lighter than a piece of plywood) this is a 29" by 24" by 1/4" thick piece that depicts Calvary men fighting with an old airplane flying overhead. Just look at the faces and expressions - even on the animals. You can't look at this one without feeling impacted. As you can see - this one has suffered a little from neglect - but it is still an incredibly moving original piece of art and I think the board issues only add to its story. The top of the upper right corner has a piece of the board missing and there are holes all around the perimeter (I've shown close ups), as if it were nailed to a wall without framing. The holes are small, and could easily be covered with a frame - if you wanted to. There's a 1/4" V shaped impression over the prop of the airplane (I've shown a close up) - it does not go through - just an impression. Aside from that, there are nibbles all around the edges - nothing major. I tried to take a lot of photos, but I still don't think they do this one justice. It's brighter than the photos make it appear. Although it weighs only 7 1/2 lbs packed, shipping will be high because it's considered over sized in the box - but it's well worth it.Please ask if you have any questions, or feel free to inform me if you have any information about one of my listings. As with any of my items, if you ever need extra pictures, let me know, just make sure that you give me an email address to send them to. Pick up is welcome on all of my items. I’m happy to combine shipments for you. I have had some trouble with the Ebay shipping calculator giving people bombastic shipping rates (especially after purchase with the Ebay “Pay Now“ invoice on Parcel Post rates). I charge shipping cost, so if you think it’s too high, email me so that I can check it out, before you pay me. That being said, we pack very well, so that will add to the weight.I ship within one business day of receipt of your payment, or I will notify you otherwise. Also, with the exception of the most heavy items, I will always give both Priority Mail and Parcel Post as shipping options, with Priority being first for my lighter items. Be sure you check out both rates . Parcel Post is running 7-14 days (but sometimes up to 3 weeks) from my house to you, on average, depending on where you live. I will be happy to ship an item in a flat rate Priority mail box, if that is cheaper to you - as long as the item will fit well packed in the box - ask me before you bid if you think that’s the case for you.Shipping costs are available to mainland U.S. only. If outside, please ask me for shipping.Customer satisfaction is extremely important to me. If you receive an item and are not satisfied in any way, please contact me. .…and thanks so much for looking, I appreciate having you as a customer!
