(1888-1969) AMERICAN - LISTED “CAPE ANN WATERFRONT LANDSCAPE" OIL on BOARD: 16.00” X 19.25” In Well Made Wood Frame - Size: 21.25” x 24.50” This ornate frame is in very good condition. NOTES: This is a very rare and beautiful CAPE ANN LANDSCAPE painting by a National Academy member artist, William Lester Stevens (N.A.). Stevens is one of only 1000 American artists to hold full membership in the National Academy. This painting is very special and Cape Ann paintings have brought Stevens his best prices at auction. WILLIAM LESTER STEVENS, N.A., was a very talented and multi-faceted 20th century American artist. He is known for his detailed paintings of genre, landscapes, villages, farms, harbors, churches, still lifes, flowers, boats, and coasts. We were able to locate a high auction record for this artist of over $23,000 (see below), but he has been rediscovered and his prices are RISING FAST. This painting would be a wonderful addition to any vintage American art collection! W. Lester Stevens was a landscape painter and teacher from the Boston school of painting. He was born in Rockport, MA in 1888 and he died in Greenfield, MA in 1969. He studied with Parker S. Perkins in Rockport; Tarbell and Benson at Boston’s Museum School; and in Europe after World War I. He was a National Academician and a member of the American Watercolor Society; a founding member of the Rockport Art Association; Springfield, MA Art League; Guild of Boston Artists; Gallery on Moors; New Haven Paint and Clay Club, CT; Gloucester Society of Art; North Shore Art Association; Boston Watercolor Club and the New York Watercolor Club. He won art awards at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC; American Watercolor Society; New Haven Paint and Clay Club; Springfield Art League; Salons of America; Washington Watercolor Club; North Shore AA; Rockport AA and more. He painted USPO murals in Dedham and Rockport, MA, the Boston City Hall, the Louisville, KY Art Museum and several schools in Boston. He lived in Rockport until 1934 and then moved to Conway. He painted thick impastoed post-impressionistic canvases early in his career and at the end of his life he used almost translucent thin washes of paint. He taught at Princeton University, Boston University, in his various studios, and at the Springfield Art Museum. During the Great Depression he taught painting at Grand Manan. A compulsive painter and known to be an “eccentric,” it is estimated he finished over 5,000 canvases. Nicknamed "Steve," he was considered eccentric, and compulsive about painting outdoors every day. He produced about 5,000 paintings. After a summer painting on Monhegan, he said "I"ve done 60 ó and got 6 good ones!" His early works have a heavy impasto in oil while his later works are often of light washes in acrylic on masonite. He taught for short periods at Boston Univ. and Princeton, but held frequent classes at his Conway studio as well as in Wash., DC and at the Springfield MFA. He took his students to Asheville, NC, New Orleans, Charleston SC, Quebec and GaspÈ, Canada; and in the 1930s Stevens ran a summer art school at Grand Manan.
